Collection: Fish Cutlery

Fish cutlery was introduced in the Victorian era around the mid-1800s. Unlike traditional cutlery, fish cutlery is made up of only two pieces: the knife and the fork , arranged at the table in order of use. Therefore, if fish is served as an appetizer, the fish knife is placed to the right of the dinner knife and the fish fork to the left of the dinner fork . However, if fish is served as the main course , the fish cutlery must be positioned in the immediate vicinity of the plate (the knife on the right and the fork on the left of the plate). As for the fish fork, it can be positioned either with the teeth facing upwards or downwards.

The fish knife. This type of knife has been specifically designed to facilitate the consumption of fish. The knife blade has a sharp curved edge, perfect for sliding between the skin and flesh of the fish. The wide blade is a useful feature as it helps lift the fish to the fork, keeping the piece intact. The blade ends in a relatively sharp tip, which is useful for lifting thorns. The large surface area of the knife can also be used to scrape or spread any sauce served with fish.

The fish fork : just like any other fork, the fish fork is also made with three or four prongs, depending on the style of the cutlery set , which are attached to a long handle. Unlike a traditional fork, the tines of a fish fork can be of equal size, because it is used together with the knife; therefore diners should not need a reinforced external tooth to help them cut the fish. If the fish is tender enough, the simultaneous use of the knife will not be necessary.
